The process of mowing your lawn has many benefits to the turf – not to mention the look of your home.  Aside from maintaining a clean and tidy appearance, it is an effective way to produce a lush, thick lawn that recycles nutrients and discourages the growth of weeds.

Here in Connecticut, grass grows faster in the spring and fall.  At these times, your lawn can handle more frequent mowing and should be kept at a shorter height.  When the growth slows down in the summertime, the height should be raised and mowings should be spaced farther apart.  The extra height shades the grass blades, helping them preserve moisture.

Lower the height again in the fall and then stop mowing when the growth stops.  One thing to keep in mind as the height level keeps changing is that you should never cut more than 1/3 of the grass blade at a mowing.

Clippings should be left on the lawn after a mowing.  Unless there are large piles, there is no benefit to removing them and they actually return nutrients back to the grass.
